Industrial Steam - South African Railways
Veteran ex Transvaal & Delgoa Bay Railway "NZASM B" or "46-tonner" 0-6-4T tank locomotive "Z.A.S.M. 3" stands out of use on Clan Syndicate property KZN - 11th August 1969. The locomotives of this class had been built by Emil Kessler, Esslingen and Werkspoor, Amsterdam. Taken over by the Imperial Military Railways during the 1899-1902 conflict, many were sold prior to the formation of South African Railways in 1910, whilst others would be withdrawn following some years in SAR service. This one had been delivered by EK under works number 2881/1897, entering service as NZASM No. 220; from 1899 it had been renumbered IMR/CSAR No. 50. It was sold into industrial use with the Victoria Falls & Transvaal Power Company’s Largo Colliery in 1905 and remained an ESC ESCOM asset, later allocated to Brakpan Power Station until 1963, when it was transferred to Rosherville JHB central workshops intended for scrapping.
